TEHRAN — Iranian authorities have arrested the chief bodyguard of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi, his website said Tuesday, as hardliners renewed calls for tougher action against the former premier.
"Ahmad Yazdan-Far, Mousavi's chief bodyguard for 27 years, has been arrested by security agents," Kaleme.com said, without specifying when the arrest took place or why.
Many of Mousavi's aides and political allies have been jailed as the regime cracked down on the opposition which rejected President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's re-election last June as fraudulent.
The former premier, who ran against Ahmadinejad in the poll, has remained unwavering in his criticism of the Islamic regime and called for new demonstrations on the anniversary of the election on June 12.
Mousavi came under fire from hardliners again this month for condemning the execution of five militants, including four Kurds, while 175 MPs in the conservative-dominated parliament called on the judiciary last week to put him on trial.
