LONDON, June 6 (UPI) -- Some western officials say it appears Iran has resumed work on its controversial nuclear program using equipment obtained through Dubai.
The Sunday Telegraph said it obtained details of a transaction in which Iran bought restricted electronics from Germany through a Dubai-based middle man using forged documentation.
"The Iranians are still managing to smuggle sophisticated technology through Dubai for its nuclear program by using false (end-user) certificates and unscrupulous intermediaries," a senior United Nations source told the British newspaper. "We need the Dubai authorities to be more rigorous in preventing the transfer of this equipment to Iran."
Intelligence officials in the United States and other western nations had concluded in 2007 that Iran's nuclear program had been suspended, however recent analysis of Iranian documents submitted to the International Atomic Energy Agency have led them to suspect work has resumed with the help of newly acquired components.
