Iran agents raid house of jailed dissident -family

TEHRAN, Aug 8 (Reuters) - Agents from Iran's judiciary raided the house of imprisoned hunger-striking dissident Akbar Ganji on Monday and struck his wife, a family member said.

A judiciary spokesman said he would not be able to comment until Tuesday.

The family member, who declined to be identified, said: "They raided our house this morning and searched it. They collected some personal stuff and took it with them."

Straining to speak through frequent sobs, the family member added that Masoumeh Shafiee, Ganji's wife, was bruised after the agents struck her.

Ganji was imprisoned in 2001 after a string of stories he wrote linking officials to the murder of political dissidents.

Shafiee has said she fears for her husband's life because of his hunger strike.

The European Union has called for Ganji's release and the White House has said U.S. President George W. Bush is deeply worried about the case of the Revolutionary Guard turned reformist.

Iranian photographers said Shafiee later attended a press event to complain about the raid on her house.
