Press group condemns arrest in Iran

(WashingtonTV)—Reporters Without Borders on Wednesday condemned Iran over the arrest of the chief executive of an information technology company and the raids carried out at his home and company’s headquarters.

Amir Asslani, was arrested on 8 August by men in plain clothes, for “sending e-mails”, said the Paris-based press freedom watchdog.

The group said that the plain clothes men, who had no arrest warrant, searched Asslani’s company’s offices, made threats against his employees and relatives, and seized a total of 15 computers.

RSF said that the arrest was “the latest in a series of measures designed to intimidate and corner the regime’s opponents.”

The group called for Asslani’s immediate release and the return of everything that was confiscated during the raids, including his computer, data discs and personal documents.

“We urge the international community and all human rights activists to react to this arrest and to condemn the Iranian government’s persecution of Internet users and cyber-dissidents,” said RSF.

“With a total of 43 journalists and bloggers currently in prison, Iran is one of the world’s most repressive countries as regards media freedom,” it added.
