TEHRAN (Reuters) — Government supporters attacked the car of a moderate Iranian opposition leader and surrounded the home of a senior cleric in the holy city of Qum on Sunday, the opposition Kaleme Web site reported.
The cleric, Yousef Sanei, had supported Mehdi Kerroubi and Mir Hussein Moussavi, the defeated candidates in last year’s presidential vote, which the opposition says was rigged for the incumbent, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Mr. Sanei had strongly criticized the authorities for suppressing opposition protests during the post-election unrest. The authorities say the vote was the healthiest election in the Islamic republic in three decades.
On the first anniversary of the disputed vote on Saturday, minor clashes between security forces and opposition supporters were reported in Tehran. A senior police official said 91 suspects had been arrested, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.
