Iran supports Lebanon, Syria in face of aggression: FM

Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki expressed Sunday Iran's willingness to fully support Lebanon and Syria in the face of any possible Israeli aggression.

Iran's government is fully prepared to support the Lebanese and Syrian nations and governments in the face of a possible Israeli aggression, Mottaki said during a joint press conference with his Lebanese counterpart Ali al-Shami in Tehran, adding Iran "will fully stand by the two countries."

He went on to say that the three countries are constantly exchanging views concerning Israel's war threats and said Iran will offer any assistance to Lebanon and Syria.

The Iranian minister condemned the recent actions by Israeli forces near Lebanon's southern border, saying "moves by the Zionist regime and the recent 'aggressions' showed its desperation rather than an indication of a will and decision to display its strength."

Mottaki further added that the UN peacekeeping force failed to fulfill its duty and to prevent such "aggressions", and regional countries will not allow Israel's hit-and-run policies to continue.

He stated further that Iran and Lebanon enjoy common stance on regional and international issues and support the establishment of just systems in international relations.

On Tuesday, Israeli and Lebanese forces exchanged fire after Israeli soldiers tried to cut down a tree on the border which they feared could provide cover for infiltrators. The fatal clash resulted in deaths on both sides and ignited fears about renewed tensions in the region.
