Technicians from North Korea appeared regularly at the Tehran airport, a former Iran diplomat and defector told various news agencies on Tuesday.
Mohammed Reza Heydari, the former Iranian consul general in Norway, told AFP that he saw the technicians between 2002 and 2007.
"I saw them with my own eyes," he told the news agency. "They were treated in a very discreet manner, in order to pass through without being seen."
If true, that could potentially signal a red flag for Western intelligence agencies, who have suspected that North Korea has been helping Iran develop nuclear weapons and long-range missile technology.
According to the Associated Press, Heydari spoke at a Paris conference in Tuesday, noting that he was “certain” the technicians were from North Korea, who “repeatedly” showed up at the airport.
Heydari resigned from his position in January and moved to Norway, where he was granted asylum about a month later.
