Iranian activists took to the streets across country

Slate Magazine, For what was the second large-scale protest in a week, Iranian activists took to the streets across the country Sunday, calling for a change in leadership as they mourned the two students who were killed by security forces last Monday. The security forces were ready. Thousands of security agents, often in plainclothes, beat protesters who were yelling "Death to the dictator" with batons, reports CNN. Witnesses also said security officers charged into crowds of activists on motorcycles. The Wall Street Journal reports that Basij militia sometimes fired directly into the crowds and killed two people, adding that security forces also dropped canisters of tear gas from a roof of a commercial building onto protesters. "This was the most violent protest we've had by far, and people were also really angry and fearless," one witness from Tehran said. The daughter of former president Ali Akbar Hasemi Rafsanjani, who is a well-known activist, was briefly detained for "encouraging the rioters," according to the country's official news agency. The Washington Post, one of the few to actually have a reporter on the ground in Tehran, reports that "authorities installed a metal door in front of the home of former presidential candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi, effectively imprisoning him." CNN says that 11 journalists working for international media had their work permits revoked for their coverage of last Monday's unrest. Those who still had their permits were warned against covering the demonstrations, and were warned that their bureaus would be closed down if they wrote "negative articles," reports the WSJ.
