The president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union has expressed his concerns about the condition of former parliament speaker Mahdi Karroubi who has been under house arrest since 14 February.
IPU President, Dr Theo-Ben Gurirab, “expressed his concern at the arrest of his former colleague Mr. Mehdi Karoubi, and his wife a few days ago,” reported the IPU website. In a letter sent on 4 March to the current speaker of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis) Ali Larijani, President Gurirab “urged the Speaker to make every effort to ensure that the fundamental rights” of Karroubi and his wife Fatemeh.
Karroubi and his wife have been under detention along with fellow opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi and his wife Zahra Rahnavard. There is currently no information about the couples' state of well-being.
