Rafsanjani’s departure promises more tensions

Following the ouster of Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani as the chairman of the mullahs’ Assembly of Experts, a member of the body raised the prospect of more infighting, saying those who did not vote for the new chairman are going to face the consequences.

According to the state-run Khabar Online on Friday, mullah Mahmoud Alavi, a member of the Assembly of Experts, said there are some who intend to smear the 18 members who abstained from the vote to appoint the new chairman Mohammad-Reza Mahdavi Kani.

He also highlighted the crises and infighting within the regime’s ruling faction, saying, “If Ayatollah Mahdavi Kani had refused to become a candidate, there may have been lots more tension which would have worried the establishment’s followers and raised hope among the enemies.”
