Tens of workers from the Kian (formerly known as Alborz) tire manufacturing plant have gathered outside the Presidential Office in Tehran to stage a protest against ten months of unpaid wages.
According to the conservative Etedal website, the workers chanted Allah-O-Akbar and shouted slogans demanding the intervention of Ahmadinejad to guarantee their rights.
The protesters’ chants were reportedly heard in the area close to the Presidential Office. Just a week before the New Year celebrations in Iran (21 March), the unhappy Kian tire employees have not only been denied their New Year bonus, but also their normal wages for the past ten months.
The recent demonstration outside Ahmadinejad’s office follows recent strikes by the workers and their families at the plant, which is situated on the Ayatollah Saeidi motorway in southern Tehran. Anti-riot forces moved to quell the protests and prevented others from joining in.
In the past two years, Kian Tire employees have held a number of strikes to protest unpaid wages. One of the workers recently told Farda radio that the conditions at the plant had worsened after the government and run by the Ministry of Industry and Mines bought the company.
