Shirkooh Moarefi, Kurdish Political Prisoner on Death Row Reportedly on Hunger Strike

Thursday April 28th 2011 – Jaras – According to human rights sources, on the eve of his execution, Shirkooh Moarefi, Kurdish political prisoner on death row has begun a hunger strike at the Central Prison in Sagaz, as of today April 28th, 2011.

According to the website Mukrian News Agency Moarefi has stated: “As of today (Thursday April 28th) I will begin a hunger strike in prison, protesting the uncertainty surrounding my fate. I have written a letter to the prosecutor and prison officials and informed them accordingly.”

It is worth mentioning that Shirkooh Moarefi, resident of Baneh [city in Northwestern Kurdistan Province of Iran] was arrested approximately 3 years ago and sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court on charges of “Mohareb” (enemy of God). The death sentenced was upheld by both the appeals court and the supreme court in Iran despite numerous complaints by the defendant’s lawyers.
