Saturday 16 July 2011US, Venezuela tension grows over Iran allegations
The US has also showed apprehension against the weekly direct flights between Iran and Venezuela that since 2007 the Venezuelan state airline Conviasa has been covering. In spite that the Venezuelan government holds they are used to boost trade, the US claims they are suspicious over who and what is being transported on these flights. In May, the United States imposed sanctions on Pdvsa for selling gasoline to Tehran. The Venezuelan government stated the as a sovereign nation Venezuela is free to trade its goods with other countries and that the sanctions operates at the margins of international laws. This move by the US has done little to foster relations Argentina and Venezuela have been holding with Iran. On the other hand, relations between Venezuela and the US have been interrupted since last year after American ambassador Larry Palmer said that morale was low in the Venezuelan army and accused the country of having bonds with Colombia rebels. With this statement the US State Department comes to deny rumours that Venezuela is somehow involved in the development of nuclear technology, but the Venezuelan government believes that Washington will continue coming up with new accusations to meddle in Venezuela's relations with other countries.
