Article 638 of the Islamic Penal Law regarding eating in public in Ramadan stipulates that, “Whoever displays a forbidden act in public in addition to being punished for the deed, will be sentenced to prison from 10 days to 2 months or up to 74 lashes.
If the person carries out an act that does not carry a punishment but traumatizes public chastity, he/she will only be sentenced to 10 days to two months of prison or up to 74 lashes”.
It has also been stipulated in the appendix of this article that “women who appear without the legal Hijab in public will be sentenced to prison from 10 days to two months or a fine of 50,000 to 5000,000 rials”. (Jahan News state-run website – Aug. 1, 2011)
