Diplomats say Iran has allowed a top U.N. official access to a site where it is developing advanced centrifuges that can be used to make nuclear fuel or to arm warheads.
They say Deputy Director General Herman Nackaerts of the International Atomic Energy Agency has also been shown other previously restricted Iranian nuclear programs.
One of the diplomats describes the Iranian move as important. The IAEA is trying to ascertain whether Iran is using the cover of a peaceful nuclear program to develop weapons capacity. The diplomats asked for anonymity Tuesday because their information was confidential.
Iran is under U.N. sanctions for refusing to stop uranium enrichment. Tehran says it is enriching to make nuclear fuel. But the process can also produce fissile warhead material.
