Iran needs $5 bn to renovate its air fleet, lawmaker

Iran needs $5bn investment to renovate its air passenger fleet, a lawmaker told IRNA Tuesday.

Mehrdad Lahooti, member of the Development Commission of the Iranian parliament added that $4 bn is needed for purchasing of new planes and one billion for the procurement of navigation equipments for the air ports.

The average age of Iranian fleet is 22.5 years which should be reduced to 15 years he said. There are still planes with about 40 years being in service, like the Boeing which crashed two years ago on the way to Urmia, in north-western Iran.

The latest accident was on Saturday when the tire of an Airbus burst while landing in Mashad airport injuring eleven passengers. /-
