Iran to increase intl. naval presence

Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari stressed the importance of providing maritime security and said, “More than 93 percent of the goods transported in the world and the country, are [transported] via the sea.”

“Therefore more effort is needed here in order to keep the economic cycle in motion,” Fars News Agency quoted the Iranian admiral as saying on Wednesday.

In line with international efforts against piracy, the Iranian Navy has been conducting anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden since November 2008 to safeguard maritime trade and particular ships and oil tankers owned or leased by Iran.

So far this year, the Navy has confronted pirates in international waters on more than 20 occasions.
