Tuesday 11 October 2011Isa Saharkhiz’s Life is In Danger
The International Association of Iranian Journalists hereby declares its deep concern about the life of prominent Iranian writer and journalist Isa Saharkhiz, a member of this association. Based on information received from Iran, Isa Saharkhiz has ended his fourth day of hunger strike while he has been in need of medical attention from outside the prison for some time now. He has been in prison for over 829 days simply for expressing his opinion and for defending the freedom of expression. He is even denied the rights that other prisoners currently enjoy; a situation that has forced him to go on a hunger strike. About four months ago, another Iranian journalist 52-year Hoda Saber lost his life in prison through a hunger strike. Prison authorities caused his death by delaying him his needed medical attention and then prevented a burial and mourning ceremony for him. And this is precisely what is feared to become Isa Saharkhiz’s fate as well. The International Association of Iranian Journalists calls on the world community, human rights groups and particularly Dr Ahmed Shahid, the special UN rapporteur for human rights in Iran to protest the treatment that the authorities of the Islamic republic of Iran provide to ideological prisoners and demands the unconditional release of all political prisoners in Iran, including journalists.
