Unemployment rate could top 20% by year end, official

A member of the High Council for Job Creation says that the official figure for unemployment would reach 20% by the end of the Iranian calendar year on March 20, ILNA reported Friday.

Mohammad Atarodian talking to the Laborers’ News Agency said if the government does not pay its debts to the production units arising through cut in subsidies and also its $13.3 billion debts to contractors the official unemployment rate would jump from currently 11.1% to 20%.

Iran has cut the subsidies paid mainly on energy carriers in November last year.

The related law says the government has to pay 30% of its earning through the cut to the industrial units as compensation.
