Monday 17 October 2011Amin Niayifar lashed for insulting Ahmadinejad
Persian2English – Amin Niayifar, 22, a mechanical engineering student with an outstanding academic record at the University of Tehran, was flogged 30 times this morning in Evin prison on the charge of insulting Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Based on reports received by Kalame, Niayifar, who is currently held in ward 350 of Evin prison, was returned to the ward after the flogging sentence was carried out. He was twitching and shivering from the pain he endured, but he did not receive any medical attention or help. Niayifar is a supporter of the Green Movement. he was arrested in the Ashura protests (December 27, 2009) and sentenced to six months in prison, a year and half suspended imprisonment, and 30 lashes. The sentence was issued by Judge PirAbbasi, the head of branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court. Niayifar is supposed to be released next week. He was summoned to be flogged at the same time that family visits are permitted in Evin prison. Niayifar had obtained a top-ranking score in the Iran National University Entrance Exam (known as Konkoor), and had a distinguished academic record. His last year’s GPA was 96%. Following his arrest, Niayifar was released on bail after spending some time in solitary confinement cells in Evin prison’s ward 209. He was returned to Evin this summer after his sentence was upheld by the Appeals Court. Consequently, he was not able to attend and continue his studies at the university for this year. |
