Iran’s economic isolation over suspicions that it may be working on a nuclear weapon deepened as the European Union agreed in principle to expand its sanctions, adding to measures announced by the United States, Britain and Canada. The added steps would bar Europeans from commercial transactions with 200 Iranian individuals, companies and groups, but would not stop European purchases of oil from Iran. Tehran, which has insisted its nuclear program is peaceful, denounced the new sanctions.
