Tribute to Behrouz Javid Tehrani: released from prison after several years of torture Follow-ups | Human Rights | Journalists and Bloggers | News Topics | Opposition | Students Persian2English – Student and political activist Behrouz Javaid Tehrani was finally released from Rajai Shahr ‘Gohardasht’ prison on December 27th, the day of his birthday, after approximately seven years behind bars. Javid Tehrani was arrested once in July 1999 during the student uprising when Iranian citizens demonstrated in support of press freedom and democracy. He was arrested a second time in 2004 in front of the United Nations office in Tehran during a silent sit-in protest in support of prisoners of conscience. He was arrested for the third time in 2005 on the charge of “Having ties to hostile groups against the regime”. Without the presence of his lawyer, Javid Tehrani was tried in branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court, presided by Judge Haddad (Hassan Zareh Dehnavi), and sentenced to seven years in prison and 74 lashes. His sentence was reduced to four years in prison and 74 lashes by the Appeals Court. The lashing sentence was carried out last year. Behrouz Javid Tehrani has been held in various detention centres in Iran since he was 19 years old. He has spent a total of 11 years of his life behind bars. Since 2005, he was never granted a day of furlough. Iranian Intelligence and Security organizations attempted to make a case against him based on a film Javid Tehrani had published of Mohsen Dogmehchi, the prisoner of conscience who died of cancer from being denied medical treatment in Evin prison. Javid Tehrani was eventually acquitted of this charge. By Siavosh Jalili and Maryam Nayeb Yazdi |
