payvand.com - By a vote of the board of trustees of the Islamic Azad University on Wednesday, Abdollah Jasbi's 29-year presidency ended, and Farhad Daneshjoo was introduced to the Supreme Council of Cultural Revolution as the nominated president, Mehr News Agency reported from Tehran.
In a controversial meeting held by the newly appointed board of trustees, Daneshjoo was elected as the president of the university after receiving 5 out of 9 votes cast by the members of the board present at the meeting.
After receiving approval by Supreme Council of Cultural Revolution, Daneshjoo will replace current chancellor Abdollah Jasbi, an ally of former Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani who has been locked in a power struggle with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad since the June 2009 presidential elections.
Islamic Azad University had become one of the main battlegrounds between Ahmadinejad and Rafsanjani, and the replacement of Jasbi by an Ahmadinejad ally is seen as a major blow to Rafsanjani and the moderate camp.
Islamic Azad University enrolls more than 1.7 million students in 400 branches across Iran.
