Bloomberg - Iranian authorities have detained about 6,000 foreigners, Mehr reported, citing Mohammad Tahouri, managing director of the Bureau for Aliens and Foreign Immigrants’ Affairs.
Most of these detainees are illegal immigrants, Tahouri said, according to the report published today by the state-run news agency. Mehr gave no time frame for the detentions.
“They have been arrested by Iranian police mostly for charges such as drug trafficking and murder,” he said, according to Mehr.
The Persian Gulf state is home to more than 1.5 million illegal immigrants, the news agency reported.
