Iran offers to ship oil to S. Korea on its own tankers

The South Korean government is still discussing how it will deal with EU sanctions on Iran that take effect July 1, said the official who asked not to be identified because the matter is confidential.

South Korea has said it may halt purchases from Iran after it failed to win an exemption from the EU ban, the Ministry of Knowledge Economy said in a statement on June 26.

Japan’s parliament passed a bill last week to provide $7.6 billion of sovereign guarantees to its tanker owners that ship Iranian oil as it seeks to maintain imports from the country.

Iranian Ambassador to Seoul Ahmad Masumifar said in an interview with Yonhap News Agency on Wednesday that Tehran “may decide to fully stop importing Korean goods” if Seoul slaps the import ban on Iranian oil.

The Korea Times reported on Wednesday that 2,900 Korean companies which engage in trade with Iran, would be hit harshly over oil ban against Iran.
