HYDERABAD, India, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Iran has offered financial help to a group of Muslim refugees in Hyderabad, India, Iranian officials said.
The group of 250 Rohingya Muslims fled to Hyderabad to escape persecution in their home country of Myanmar.
Mahmoud Safari, Iran's consul general at Hyderabad, delivered a check for 6,500 Indian rupees (about $1,166) Thursday to the Confederation of Voluntary Organizations, which works with the U.N. Human Rights Commission, to help refugees, the Islamic Republic News Agency reported.
Safari condemned the persecution of Muslims in Myanmar and expressed regret that their treatment was going unnoticed by the international community, Iran's government-backed news agency said.
He also urged Myanmar government officials to work for a fair solution to the unrest, including a permanent solution for the hundreds of thousands of stateless Rohingya Muslims he said were living in makeshift refugee camps.
