Saturday 11 August 2012Iran must be stopped from obtaining nuclear capabilities
A nuclear Iran would not only pose a threat to the United States, but to the world. Despite pressure from a multitude of countries, Iran continues to advance its nuclear program and strengthen its military. It claims the program is for peaceful purposes, but the International Atomic Energy Agency has concluded there are signs Iran is working to possess a nuclear weapon. There are two central reasons why the world can't let Iran become capable of obtaining nuclear weapons. First, should Iran build a nuclear bomb, it may spark an arms race in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia has already said it would build a nuclear weapon if Iran does. Second, Iran, which has continually threatened the U.S. and its allies, could give a nuclear weapon to one of the many terrorist organizations it aids, such as Hezbollah. Not to mention, Iran could use the weapon itself. With help from President Barack Obama, Republicans and Democrats in Congress have passed crippling sanctions on the Iranian oil industry and its central bank. These sanctions are having a significant economic effect, yet the Iranian regime persists, claiming it's immune to sanctions. While there is a military option, diplomacy must be given a chance first. No one should want war, which is why this is such a critical time. This is an issue for which all Americans should set aside political differences in order to secure our nation and allies from this threat.
