Benjamin Netanyahu is correct and historically eloquent. Iran must not be allowed to complete the final stage of uranium enrichment, making it 90% of the way to creating a nuclear bomb.

Given that Israel is estimated to have hundreds of nuclear warheads, why does Netanyahu think a nuclear capable Iran is such a threat? The powers that control things in Iran are not suicidal. They may leverage their power in the Mideast a bit more with a weapon, but sooner or later Iran will join the nuclear club. I'm tired of Netanyahu and other right-wing Israeli politicians trying to get the U.S. into a war on their behalf.

War should be a last resort, and most experts indicate that it is not time. President Obama has made it crystal clear Iran will not be allowed to get nuclear weapon. What more can you ask for at this time? Obama's U.N. speech was quite direct, and there is no reason not to take him at his word.

I have nothing against Israel attacking Iran, but I am against the USA helping. We need to recover from the Iraq debacle and Afghanistan waste. We need to give our soldiers a rest as well.

If a nuclear Iran shouldn't concern the U.S., why would Obama say, "And that's why the United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon"? And if it should, some might see that as Obama putting Israeli interests before U.S. interests. Or it could be that American and Israeli interests closely align in this, as they do in many matters. Helping Israel also can mean helping ourselves.

Nuclear armed Israel poses a serious threat to peace in the Middle East. The constant threatening behavior toward Iran could well force a nuclear arms race, which is the last thing we need. Surely it is time to stand up to Israel and move toward the nuclear disarming of that belligerent nation.

If Israel does attack Iran, I hope the U.S. stays out of it, or we will have a revolution at home. How can this country tell another what it can and can't do?

Letters to the editor:

A war with Iran would be no quick affair, as many senior political and military figures have pointed out. It would make the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, which cost trillions of dollars and the lives of thousands of soldiers and civilians, seem easy.

The fragile American economic recovery would be in serious jeopardy if Iran and its allies cut off oil to the West. This would be highly likely if the pro-war crowd gets its way.

Give sanctions longer to work; it is the right thing to do.

USA TODAY's astute report "Experts say Iran's missile arsenal poses threat to U.S." showed the capability of Iran to attack U.S. forces abroad (News, Sept. 25). Americans are not out of harm's way as long as enemies like the Iranian dictators and mullahs develop such weaponry. A nuclear strike from Iran, or anywhere in the Middle East, will be a grave danger to America. Let us stop them now.
