Iranian MPs want law to ban females from travelling

Shahrzadnews:The eight women in Iran’s Majles (parliament) have called for a law preventing young women from travelling abroad as tourists. Such trips, they said, are “completely pointless”. The demand came during a Majles debate on a bill calling for single women under forty to require the consent of a male guardian when applying for a passport.

Shahla Mirglobiat, who is spokesperson and deputy leader of the women’s faction, told the ILNA news agency: “This bill should be extended to cover young girls who pointlessly wish to travel abroad as tourists. We have no problem with the passport bill, but want to add this amendment. We would like to know why so many young women want to travel outside the country. They should only do so to study at a foreign university, or attend a scientific seminar, or if they are businesswomen involved in trade, or have been invited to visit family members. There is no point in women with none of these reasons travelling abroad.”
