80,000 young Iranians queue for new noses

Shahrzadnews:The latest figures indicate that over 80,000 young Iranians are waiting for cosmetic surgery to change the shape of their noses. The value to the industry is around 200 billion tomans, or 700 million US dollars. The average age of those signing up for the operation is 20.

According to the Jame Jam news website, tanning, tattooing, manicures, nose-reshaping and Botox injections are all currently major preoccupations for affluent Iranian women, earning millions of dollars a year for their doctors.

According to figures released by the Iranian Association of Facial Surgeons over 240,000 cosmetic procedures were carried out last year, 170,000 of which were to reshape noses. Such operations became popular with women in the 1990s, and in recent years men between 17 and 25 are also becoming increasingly interested.

Iran is one of the most popular countries in the world for nose operations. According to its Association of Cosmetic Surgeons over 80,000 rhinology investigations are carried out annually. The number of operations is seven times greater than in the United States.

Dr. Parviz Mazaheri, director of the Association of Psychologists, says people seek nose-reshaping for three reasons; they have respiratory difficulties, or their nose is deformed, or they have psychological problems arising from lack of self-esteem. But the head of Iran’s Rhinology Research Institute Dr. Mohsen Naraghi says that over 50% of those applying for nose surgery do not really need it. “However, most nose operations will improve the patient’s breathing,” he added.
