More women smuggling drugs out of Iran

Media in Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia have reported several incidences of Iranian women found guilty being sentenced to death, including a recent case involving two sisters, aged 24 and 26, who were arrested in Kuala Lumpur airport and tried by a court in the city of Shah Alam.

Iranians are currently awaiting trial in foreign countries on charges of drug-smuggling.

Ghashghavi did not specify the gender distribution of those concerned, but in recent years many Iranian women have been arrested at international ports of entry for the crime.

When Europeans citizens are arrested on such charges their governments usually intervene, contacting local officials in the hope of ensuring a fair trial. In contrast Iranian officials tend to react only when news of the arrest of Iranians has been reported in the foreign country’s newspapers.
