Friday 19 April 2013Belgian Minister shares concern of religious persecution such as dervishes in Iran
IOPHRI - In a mail to a member of IOPHRI, the Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders expresses his concern about the human rights situation in Iran in general and the persecution of religious minorities, such as the dervishes, in particular. "Your mail of 15 April had my full attention. I share your concern about the human rights situation in Iran in general and the persecution of religious minorities, such as the dervishes, in particular. Therefore, Belgium recently, along with other EU Member States, actively supported the resolution on the situation of human rights adopted by the Human Rights Council. This resolution provides for the extension of the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Iran. In addition, Belgium supported specifically the work of the Special Rapporteur by an intervention during the interactive debate with the Special Rapporteur. In this intervention Belgium explicitly mentioned the fate of the dervishes, who are victims of a.o. arbitrary arrests and called on the Iranian government to immediately release them and other political prisoners and prisoners of conscience. Hoogachtend, Didier REYNDERS |
