Iranian government fears student protests during presidential elections

Shahrzadnews: As Iran prepares itself for a presidential election next month, the Ministry of Higher Education has told all universities to bring forward exam dates, so that the summer break will begin much earlier than usual.

Shahrzad News was informed of the directive by a senior Iranian lecturer who wishes to remain anonymous. “The authorities want to ensure that universities are closed during the election, thereby minimising the risk of student’s coming together and staging political protests” said the lecturer.

In February Iranian media reported that education officials had told universities to conduct all their exams before June 12th, and close their doors for the summer on the following day.
