New oil reserves discovered in western Iran: report

APA -- New research by Iran National Oil Company has led to the discovery of "huge oil shale reserves" in Iran's western province of Lorestan, semi-official Mehr news agency reported Saturday, APA reports quoting Xinhua.

Iran National Oil Company discovered new oil shale reserves in Khorramabad block, said the report, adding that the discovery came two years after the departure of Norwegian company Statoil ASA from exploration and development plan of Khorramabad block.

"The geological and seismic studies of Khorramabad exploration blocks have ended and new oil shale has been discovered in this exploration block," Hormuz Ghlavand, Exploration Manager of Iran National Oil Company told Mehr without expanding on the amount of the reserves.

The Iranian energy official said that, however, these oil reserves are not economically feasible for developments and " currently we do not have any plan to drill exploratory wells in this block" which is approximately 7,425 square kilometers.
