Flint — The sister of an ex-Marine incarcerated in Iran for nearly two years has met with a Swiss ambassador about her brother's case as part of an effort to seek his freedom.
MLive.com reports Sarah Hekmati was in Washington, D.C., this week to meet with Livia Leu Agosti, who represents U.S. interests in Iran in the absence of direct diplomatic relations. Sarah Hekmati says the family wants to remain positive.
She gave Agosti letters and books to hopefully have delivered to Amir Hekmati.
The family says he went to Iran in 2011 to visit his grandmothers. Iran accuses Hekmati of spying, but a previously issued death sentence was overturned.
U.S. officials deny the charge. Hekmati was born in Arizona and grew up in Michigan, where his parents and sister live.
