Monday 24 June 2013Britain heading for war on Iran, warns Labour MPMorning Star Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn warned the People's Assembly that Britain could be dragged into a devastating war with Iran. He said Saturday's meeting in Qatar between nations backing Syrian rebels, such as Britain, the US and France, "looks to me like leading to a war in Iran." Mr Corbyn also used the Welfare not Warfare session to urge Labour Party leaders to oppose Tory plans to splurge £100 billion on replacing the Trident nuclear weapons system. He asked them to consider "how many hospitals, schools and homes could we build with that money" and said people working in the industry could use their skills in these projects. Stop the War coalition leader Lindsay German said: "If we want to house people and educate them to the highest standards then we have to stop paying for war." "These things are totally connected," she said. "The same people telling us we have to suffer austerity are the ones who made us fund a war against some of the poorest people in the world." Author Tariq Ali warned that next year's 100th anniversary of the start of World War I would become the "next jamboree" laid on by politicians to "divert people's attentions from austerity." A member of Disabled People Against Cuts also hit out at the government for allowing Atos to declare former soldiers who are suffering with injuries or stress as fit to work.
