Georgia, Tbilisi, 3 July / Trend N.Kirtzkhalia /
The decision to cancel the visa-free regime with Iran is temporary, and there is nothing alarming about it, Georgia's Minister of Foreign Affairs Maia Pandzhikidze said on Wednesday.
"This is not a decision by the Foreign Ministry; it was taken by the commission dealing with migration issues. The commission is chaired by the Minister of Justice," Pandzhikidze said.
According to her, migration policy, which until now did not exist, is under development.
"There are new challenges necessitating development of this policy. Visa regimes unilaterally abolished by Georgia should be reviewed and adjusted. visa-free communication with Iran was suspended as part of this complex process," Pandzhikidze said.
She also recalled that in 2012, the agreement was unilaterally suspended by Iran, which was not followed by any disturbance.
According to the minister, the citizens of Iran will experience no problems and will be able to obtain visas both at the consulate of Georgia and at the border.
Pandzhikidze also noted that Georgia is interested in maintaining good relations with its neighbors, including Iran.
