PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Rhode Island state officials are marking the state's decision to divest money from companies with operations in Iran.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee, Attorney General Peter Kilmartin and state lawmakers are scheduled to hold a ceremonial bill signing on Tuesday for legislation requiring the state to divest from companies doing business in Iran.
The new law mandates that the state retirement board identify any investments in companies with operations in Iran. Unless the companies agree to cease operations there, the state would pull its investment. The state would similarly end relationships with any state contractors doing business in Iran.
Supporters say the law would help put financial pressure on Iran to drop its nuclear weapon development efforts.
More than two dozen states have enacted similar laws.
