Bill Clinton optimistic about Iran

By GINGER GIBSON

Former President Bill Clinton says there's a better chance to have constructive talks with Iran than when he attempted to while in office.

"There is a greater chance of constructive engagement this time," Clinton said in an interview airing Sunday on ABC's "This Week."

Clinton said the electoral politics in Iran have changed a lot since he was president.

"President Obama has enough time to make something out of this," Clinton said. "So I think they should keep the door open. This is-- but the short answer to your question is, we should keep working for the best and preparing for the worst."

Clinton said Syria could be a "dress rehearsal" if Russia and the U.S. are able to secure and destroy the chemical weapons.

"They have repeated their pledge that they will not develop nuclear weapons," Clinton said of Iran. "And we can't take their word for it. But we can take them up on it. But I think the first test will be, ironically, whether the Russian-Syrian promise works out. If it does, we can go on-- this. And I hope they're doing lots of stuff that you and I don't know anything about."
