Sunni convert with a brain tumor deprived of medical treatment

HRANA News Agency – A Sunni convert from Iran’s Ahwazi Arab minority currently detained in Karoun Prison in Ahwaz is being deprived of adequate medical treatment by prison authorities, despite suffering from a brain tumor.

According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), prison authorities have refused to transfer 30-year old Jaber Sakhravi, whose condition is deteriorating, to a hospital outside of the prison where he can receive adequate medical treatment.

Jaber Sakhravi, a computer-science graduate, was arrested in Koye Alawi (Hay al-Thawra district) in Ahwaz city on 26 March 2014 in relation to his religious activities after converting from Shi’ism to Sunni Islam.

He sustained serious injuries after being subjected to severe torture whilst detained in the Ministry of Intelligence detention center in Khuzestan between March and June 2014, leading to the paralysis of both of his legs.

He was transferred to Karoun Prison on 17 June 2014. The authorities have still prevented him from receiving adequate medical treatment.
