US cites concerns about Iran sending operatives, arms into Iraq

WASHINGTON, Nov 7 (KUNA) -- US officials are aware that Iran has sent some operatives inside Iraq that are training and advising some Iraqi security forces, and of greater concern, working with Shi'a militia, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said on Friday.
"We also know that Iran has provided some supplies, arms, ammunition and aircraft for Iraq's armed forces," she said during a briefing.
"We appreciate the seriousness of the security situation in Iraq and the brutal acts of ISIL, but we have expressed our concerns about Iranian activities and reports of Iranian flow of arms into Iraq previously, and that would certainly apply here as well," added Psaki.
Regarding Shi'a militias, Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi has noted on several occasions the importance of ensuring that all militias are regulated under government control, "and obviously that continues to be an ongoing challenge," Psaki said. (end) rm.bs
