30,000 Iranians die of cancer annually

Tehran, Feb 1, IRNA – Over 30,000 Iranians die of cancer each year, Iran Scientific Association of Cancer said on Sunday adding that the figure is projected to double over the next two decades.

Cancer is one of the main causes of death across the world and the deadly disease is behind 12 percent of deaths occurred each year worldwide, said the association.

It is anticipated that the rate of fatalities from cancer over the world will increase by 45 percent by 2030 to reach 12 million per annum.

Cancer is the third killer in Iran and 40 percent of the patients can be treated. Prevention is the most cost-effective method to counter cancer in Iran.

Smoking and tobacco products are the main causes of the cancer which can be avoided. One third of the cancer cases are caused by smoking.

All types of cancer including lung, larynx, mouth, kidney, stomach, colon and rectum cancers are linked with smoking.

Obesity, overweight and inaction play crucial role in outbreak of the deadly disease.
