GOP Strategist: Trump Should Have Been Voice of Voters, Not Himself

The campaign of Donald Trump "should have been a slam dunk for the GOP," but instead became focused on the "voice" of the GOP nominee instead of that of fed-up American voters, Republican strategist Frank Luntz said Sunday.

In an interview on CBS News' "Face the Nation,"Luntz slammed both Trump and his campaign for repeatedly veering off a message that resonates with Americans who want change in Washington.

"The focal point wasn't on those forgotten Americans," Luntz said.. "It's all focused on him… his battles with just about everybody."

"If he had stayed the voice and the vision for those people who have been left behind, this race would be a lot different than it is right now."

"This is about the voice of the voters, not the voice of Donald Trump… This should have been a slam dunk for the GOP."

Still, Luntz believes the election is not over yet.

"There are are enough people still undecided," he said, predicting Hillary Clinton will not receive 50 percent of the vote. "But it requires a level of disciple that this [Trump] campaign has not had."

"I have never seen a campaign with less discipline, less focus," he added.
