Monday 21 January 2013Young people are defying Iran’s social agendaShahrzad News In spite of 33 years of persistent propaganda and penalties aimed at Islamising the social and cultural behaviour of Iran’s younger generation, government officials now admit that over 90% live with members of the opposite sex, with the consent of their parents. Shahrzadnews:In spite of 33 years of persistent propaganda and penalties aimed at Islamising the social and cultural behaviour of Iran’s younger generation, government officials now admit that over 90% live with members of the opposite sex, with the consent of their parents. Sociologist Dr. Mustafa Foroutan told the ILNA news agency: “Young unmarried men and women living together is an issue that has nothing to do with income or education. The population of our industrial cities continues to grow, thanks in part to mass immigration from the countryside. That, along with the growth of urban culture, leads lonely young people separated from their traditional homelife to look for someone to share their lives with. Single men and women advertise for partners on the walls of our cities, and a lucrative market has sprung up, with big companies acting as go-betweens.” Foreign satellite channels ‘are responsible for 98% percent of this immorality,’ added Dr. Foroutan. He called on the government “to create conditions in which young people are attracted to marriage rather than temporary partnerships.” |
