Concerns growing for Sunni scholar arrested last month

HRANA News Agency – Concerns are growing for a Sunni scholar who is being held at an unknown location since his arrest more than a month ago in Iran.

According to the report of Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), Shaykh Hafiz Towhid Qureshi, the Imam of the ‘Imam Shafi’i Masjid’ in Sholoqun village, Gilan province, was arrested by security forces a month ago and taken to an unknown location.

His whereabouts and condition is still unknown.

Officials have provided no reason for his arrest. His family believe he was arrested due to his preaching of Sunni beliefs within the Shia-dominated Iran.

One of his relatives, who did not want to be named, told the HRA News Agency, “Shaykh Hafiz was arrested because he used to preach Sunni teachings and defend Sunni beliefs during his sermons and speeches.”
